SONANCE

SONANCE brings together a series of abstract works on paper and wood through which the artist explores states of transition. The sources of the paintings include references to ancient geological maps, the edges of seascapes, and current environmental catastrophes. An engagement with realms of deep time informs the imagery, transforming the invisible and the imagined into striking visual language.

Drawing on the language of sound, several works connect with the histories and inaudible forces within our waterways. These waters vibrate with non-human songs beyond the range of human hearing, revealing invisible layers that carry the energies of our coastal zones. McDonald’s paintings combine intense sequences of oil paint with natural materials such as iron-rich oxides, cinnabar, malachite and plaster, producing works charged with movement, sound, and rhythm. A distinct frequency runs through her practice — a pulse, a vibration that animates the surface of each piece.
